Devouring Buenos Aires

I made the decision to vacation in Argentina on a whim.  Until we boarded the plane, even my wife had no idea where we were headed.  We had few solidified plans and little focus, other than immersing ourselves in the culture and, of course, the food.

I love a 5 star restaurant as much as the next guy, but, to truly discover an area, I believe you have to eat where the locals eat.  When in Rome.  And so, we ate our way across the Argentinean expanse.  Street food.  Beef.  Empanadas.  Beef. Thus far, the best pizza in the world. And beef.  And more empanadas.

Between planned gorges, we relaxed at the Hotel Casa Calma - truly an oasis of serenity in the bustling center of Buenos Aires its ultra modern decor juxtaposed the graffiti-covered, European-inspired architecture of the city.  Though tiny, this tranquil, sleek lobby with vine covered walls and acrylic desks left you feeling miles from anywhere, but kept you steps from everything.

Our time was split between Casa Calma Wellness Hotel and Estancia el Rocio in the pampas where we devoured the most delicious meals.  Since we were the only guests at the Estancia, we chose to ride the trails, checking out the livestock (ahem, tonight’s dinner) and the surrounding areas at sunset.  The feasts began with chicken and fresh cheese empanadas (20 or so that were gone before dinner was even served) and ended on a sweet note with a walnut encrusted dulce de leche mousse.

For those of you considering a visit to Buenos Aires, I highly recommend either (both if you have time) locations.  The staffs make you welcome in your home away from home.

During the warmer months, polo matches can be enjoyed pool-side at the Estancia or, if your game is a bit rusty, try one of the many polo clinics available.

All in all, Argentina was mouth-watering. Did I mention the empanadas? The Estancia el Rocio website has a recipe posted in the "flavours" section under the main image. If you decide to make these let me know how they turn out, and what you think!

I finally watched your video. It was great. Definitely looking forward to some traveling myself later on in life!! Talk to you soon!

Hi! I found your blog looking for packaging designs in Flickr and I absolutely fell in love with them! Actually, I wrote you 'cause I'm a graphic design student thinking of choosing Packaging design as my orientation. And I'm from Buenos Aires! I'm so happy you liked it. I think is an amazing city, and empanadas the best non-healthy delicious snack.
Well, that's all. Beautiful designs. Hope some day I become as talented as you are!

BsAs was amazing, I will definitely be back for more empanadas! I would love to see your portfolio or your flickr posts, feel free to send us a contact request on flickr. We love sharing!

Very cool video, great editing and soundtrack! The footage makes me want to head to the airport right now and jump on a plane to anywhere... I commend your adventurous spirit!
