Yves Saint Laurent Designs Line of Luxury Cigarettes

…Again. The first time luxury fashion house Yves Saint Laurent came out with their own brand of cigarettes was back in 1985 amidst a flurry of controversy. Now, with even stronger evidence of health risks and numerous anti-smoking groups, it's sure to stir up even more controversy.

It's actually nothing new. Other luxury brands such as Versace, Pierre Cardin, and Cartier have also added nicotine to their line. Though they themselves may not actually produce them, they more than likely licensed out their names to tobacco companies. These "luxury" cigarettes marketed and sold mainly in areas like Asia and Russia, are also easily purchased online.

The YSL carton usually doesn't show a Surgeon General's Warning as required in the states. But certain countries like France for instance does require one. The warning label in the photo translates to: "Smoking seriously harms your health and others around you". Russia "implemented the new regulations requiring health warnings on 30 percent of the front and 50 percent of the back of the pack.  Graphic warnings are not required", according to tobaccocontrollaws.org.

Aesthetically, the packaging is luxe and sophisticated. The rich black textured paper creates a pleasing contrast to the sheen of the gold metallic hot stamp logo, that is also embossed. And the interior gold cuff with a tone-on-tone gold hot stamp, that is hidden until opened, is a welcomed surprise.

Dislike:

Gorgeous packaging that envelopes cancer causing carcinogens and chemicals. It seems that fashion is trying to revive the old idea that smoking is "glamourous", regardless of it's risks.

This raises a question: should we as professionals isolate the packaging from the product, or is there a personal moral obligation? It seems that when health warnings are placed on high end luxury cigarette packaging, the packaging somehow loses it's charm. Perhaps there's a lesson to learn from this, something that goes beyond skin deep.

Great collection of bags. I will keep these sites bookmarked so that I won’t have to spend so much time looking for the right resources in the future. The packaging is just a marketing strategy to project luxury. But otherwise, it is still just a cigarette like any other.
